Statement On NDP Day of Action on Housing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Date; November 28, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every person in Ontario, including Don Valley West, deserves a safe stable roof over their heads under which they can create a home .  The Conservative and Liberal governments in the past and present have made it harder for Don Valley families to afford the life they are working for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today on November 28 an NDP Day of Action on Housing over 8,000 people in Toronto alone are homeless, many sleeping on snowy grates on our streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over 100,000 in Toronto alone are languishing on wait lists for social housing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The average price of a detached home in Toronto has risen year after year at a rate of 30% to over $1,54 million.  The price of a semi detached house to $1.2 million and a condo to close to $1 million<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surely a home – an affordable, safe, comfortable roof over oneshead – is not to much to ask for people who live in Don Valley West. And across Ontario<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 2 an NDP government will begin to address the challenge that Ontarians face in find in a place to call home.  I am proud of our plan to ensure that this crucial factor in the lives of individuals and families becomes a reality for each and everyperson in the riding<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NDP, when in government after the next election June 2, will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give financial help to renters who need it most<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Help first time buyers with a down payment<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure what is paid by a new renter is what the last renter paid to end skyrocketing rents<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extend the life of 260,000 affordable homes, and build 69,000 new ones<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enact a plan to end homelessness within 10 years<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take om speculators and developers with a 20 percent Nonm-Resident Specualtion tax, a vacant homes tax <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know the need that exists for far too many in Don Valley West.  I have lived it personally growing up as a child and I have witnessed it while living in the riding. I also know that it is long past time for Don Valley West to speak with one voice.  What we desire for ourselves we desire for all.  I believe this is a moment when we can join together in Don Valley West and help elect an NDP government that will centre every decision on the well being of people<\/p>\n\n\n\n
