For over twenty years I have been fortunate to have had a relationship with youth in and from care in Japan and their adult allies. Japan is on the cusp of change. Finally. Spurred by high profile deaths of children the Japanese government has committed to creating a child advocacy system and committed to better outcomes for youth leaving the child welfare system.
Our Voice Our Turn Japan is a group of youth in and from care supported by amazing adult allies. Remember the name Marika Kikuchi! They are based in Tokyo. They are a network of young people who have their own initiatives designed to make change from older youth teaching younger youth Japanese traditions, to an online forum to older youth teaching youth in children’s homes self expression through dance. Truly inspiring. I am working to support the group.

Totorri is a small but mighty Prefecture in Japan. A coalition of academics led by Professor Chizuno Hata, service providers and the Prefecture Assembly came together around youth in care. Young people spoke and allies listened. I was so fortunate to be an invited guest. Agreement was established to develop a child advocacy system for the prefecture and to create a means of better supporting youth leaving care. I am honoured to have been welcomed on this journey with them.
